Instagram 24-Hour Messaging Window: What You Can and Can't Send
Instagram's 24-hour messaging window explained: when you can reply freely, how comments and the 7-day private reply differ, and what to do after the window closes.
On Instagram, a business can send a free-form DM to a person only after that person starts the interaction. When someone messages you (or replies to your Story), a 24-hour window opens in which you can reply. When someone comments on your post, Meta allows one private reply to that comment, within 7 days. Outside those windows, automated messages generally can’t be sent, and promotional blasts to people who haven’t interacted are not allowed.
These rules are Meta’s, not any tool’s. They are what keep official-API automation separate from spam. Details can change, so confirm the current wording in Meta’s developer documentation before building anything critical.
The two doors that open a conversation
| Trigger | What opens | How long |
|---|---|---|
| The person sends you a DM, or replies to your Story | A messaging window to reply | 24 hours from their last message |
| The person comments on your post or Reel | One private reply to that comment | Up to 7 days after the comment |
Both start with the person acting first. That is why comment-to-DM and Story-reply automation are allowed and cold DMs are not.
What you can do inside the window
- Answer the question the person asked.
- Send the resource they requested (link, guide, price).
- Ask follow-up questions and continue the conversation while they keep replying. Each new message from them reopens the 24 hours.
- Capture contact details they choose to share.
What you can’t do
- Message people who never interacted with you. No cold DMs through the API.
- Send a second private reply to the same comment. It is one per comment.
- Reply to a comment after 7 days with a private reply.
- Send promotional messages after the window closes by simply continuing the automation. Meta documents limited exceptions (for example, a Human Agent tag meant for a real person to answer support questions, up to 7 days). That is not a workaround for automated sales follow-ups. Check the current documentation for the exact conditions.
- Use unofficial tools to get around the rules. That is the path that gets accounts restricted. See is Instagram DM automation safe.
How this changes the way you design flows
- Put the value in the first DM. The private reply is your guaranteed message. Send what you promised in the comment, not a teaser.
- Ask a question that invites a reply. When the person answers, a new 24-hour window opens and the conversation can continue. See Instagram DM sequence automation.
- Time your follow-ups inside the window. A reminder planned for hour 30 may not be deliverable. Plan sequences to fit within 24 hours of the person’s last message.
- Don’t depend on old comments. If a comment is older than 7 days, the private reply window is closed.
How Breeze handles it
Breeze sends through Meta’s official API and follows the same rules. The comment-to-DM message goes out as the private reply, one per comment. Comments older than 7 days, or made before your account was connected, don’t receive a DM. A continuation that waits for the person’s text reply expires after 24 hours instead of being forced through. Rejected sends are logged with a reason so you can see what happened. To set up the first message, see how to automate Instagram comments step by step.
After the window closes
You have honest options: make the next piece of content give people a new reason to comment or reply (a new keyword post or Story), answer manually from the inbox if the rules allow it, or let the person come back. Don’t try to push messages through.
Breeze
Breeze is a paid Instagram automation platform with a 3-day trial, built on the official API and Meta’s messaging rules.
FAQ
What is the Instagram 24-hour messaging window? After a person messages you or replies to your Story, you can reply for 24 hours from their last message. Each new message from them restarts the clock.
Can I DM someone who commented on my post? Yes, with one private reply to that comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. That is how comment-to-DM automation works.
Can I send a second DM to the same comment? No. Instagram allows only one private reply per comment.
What happens to my automation after 24 hours? Follow-up messages that depend on the person’s last message may not be deliverable after the window. Design your flow so the key content goes in the first messages.
Does the 24-hour rule apply to Breeze? Yes. Breeze follows Meta’s rules: one private reply per comment, within 7 days, and replies inside the messaging window.
